My son is 5 months old and since last one and a half month is down with cold and cough .
===== well, you mentioned cough and cold, by cold i mean runny nose and not the chest discomfort. if so, it is not uncommon for an infant to get cold or like symtom due to narrow nostrils.
infact in these 5 months this is fourth time he had this prblm.
====== and thats something to worry, id each episode lasted for max 4 days and had no fever but sneezing, i will better term this as allergic rhinitis, whihc may be precipitated by cold weaither, dust etc.
if any time the runny nose lasted for 10 days or more, its likely that its turning into adenoiditis. And if you are sure that runny nose was never a problem, you may be dealing with either reflux disease, or asthma or tonsillitis. First two will usually wheeze.
Now he is better but hasnt recovered completely he coughs off and on throughout the day and night.
====== persistant cough upto 20 days isnt unusual sequalae after a viral infection of nose or throat or for that matter tonsillitis or adenoditis. cough through out day and night can be part of reflux disease, tonsillo-adenoiditis or foreign body. its unlikely for asthma to have such uniform cough throughout day and night.
Otherwise he is fine gaining weight and taking his feeds, is having no other problem like runny nose or phlegm or fever.
======= that itself suggests that child is fine, lungs are unlikely to be affected and the problem is more likely in throat- tonsilloadenoidtis.
Only thing worries me is that when he coughs it is so bad that he appears to be getting short of breath.
======= it does feel like chocking as these tonsil adenoid swelling are practically narrowing the diameter of breathing area. This can better be tackled by giving saline nebulisations 3-4 times a day; and continuing breast feeds till rrecovery.
Im worried its asthma or something because in Bangalore due to the climatic conditiond we have heard many infants develop
========= from your history it doesnt look like. Asthma is usually not diagnosed below 2 year age. for details read my article on asthma at my site.
Pls advice me is there any test or anything to make sure my child is fine and hasnt developed any asthma or anything.
======== to be doubly sure you can get him examined by specialist.
